Losing the Privilege

We had spent a wonderfully creative day at the Dallas Museum of Art. There was painting. Reading. Snacking. Crafting. Playing. Exploring. Wondering.

It took a lot of energy. Judah sacked out in the stroller on the way to the car. Selah fought sleep with her normal contrary intensity.

She had her mind on one thing. Gum.

"I want some gum, Momma," she said repeatedly.

"I know. When we get to the car," I answered.

We arrived at the car and I began the process of loading. Judah in his seat. Diaper bag on floorboard. Painted masterpieces tucked beside. Purse, keys and phone on front seat. Remnants of sack lunches, too. Stroller in the trunk. And then Selah.

"Climb up in your seat, Selah," I said.

"No, I want some gum," she whined.

"Don't say no to Mommy, " I retorted. "Please get in your seat."

Selah wriggled lose from my hand and ran around the car away from me.

"Enough, Selah," I raised my voice in irritation. "Get in the car or you will lose your privilege of having some gum."

"No," she said.

I caught her by the hand, scooped her up and plopped her in the carseat. She squirmed and yelled. And yelled even more when I informed her there would be no gum.

"No, Mommy," she snapped. "If you don't give me my gum, you will lose the privilege of holding me."

The girl knows how to push my buttons. How to strike where it hurts. And so there was no gum for Selah; no holding for Momma.

First of all, I have missed your posts, and..well, just YOU.

Next, she is a little stinker. Can you imagine the things she will come up with when she is a teenager??!!

Hopefully we will see you at Ellie's birthday party!

I hate when they run around stuff so you can't get them. The only thing I can take comfort in is that one day she'll probably be chasing a kid around the car too. :) We can hope, right??
